I’m a final-year theoretical physics PhD student studying decoherence in coupled spin systems at the University of St Andrews, UK. I’m a keen science communicator and enjoy engaging the public with my research. I’m a member of the Scottish Centre for Doctoral Training in Condensed Matter Physics (CM-CDT) and was until recently one of their outreach co-ordinators. When I’m not doing or explaining science I enjoy hiking, swimming, cycling and backpacking.
Hi Helen. Your mum sent me the link to your blog a while ago and just looked at it. Much as it (like your research topic) defies comprehension the entry about learning new stuff is great. Keep it up. And have a good summer wherever your travels may take you. Shelagh x

Hi Helen. Where did you take the idea for your 20s video on Heisenberg’s principle? The idea of the ball in a box is a nice idea and I would like to know if there is some literature on it. MX

Hi,
Glad you liked the idea. The hyperphysics site contains an explanation of the maths behind the particle in a box and how this relates to the uncertainty principle: http://hyperphysics.phy-astr.gsu.edu/hbase/quantum/uncer2.html
Of course, in the video I really should have shown a wavefunction sloshing around inside the box rather than a ball, but that would have been tricky to show with plasticine!
